Pre-Production Techniques for the Creative Media Industries

Type Of Production

All these pieces of documentation have to be filled in prior to actual production which for my project completed before i began filming. Film and Tv pre production mostly involves finding actors, locations and a film crew such as camera men to be able to create a production in film or Tv, whereas pre production on radio does not need any of this pre production therefore being considerably different  in the way pre production is taken place.

Overall the type of production you are doing could determine what type of pre production is needed, which is why type of production is important to know so you can complete the required pre production paperwork for your project and know how approach all aspects of production.

There are many different production that can change the way pre production is appeared on the media stage due to many different requirements for each type of production. The productions are Radio, Television, Radio, Photographic etc. The production I will be discussing and focusing on is Film and Television, the reason for it because it relates to the project I've be working on and also having a similar type of pre production. All the pre production requirements are very similar to production such as getting actors, finding suitable locations and getting a film crew together, all though making a independent film or a high budget film, all the pre production is the same just on different level.

The project that I've been working on the past few weeks was creating an advert promoting natural hair product from the Arabs. I've completed pre production paperwork similar to Film and Television production. Pre production that is involved in Filming and Television takes the majority of the timing over all the production, filming and post production as to pre production being a big part of the planning of a Film etc which will also speed up the filming as everything will be planned before production. The types of paperwork and pre production involved in Film and Television production including several pieces of documentation that needs to be completed such as recces, actor release form, shooting schedules, call sheets, story boards and risk assessments.

Finance

Finance is the most important side as the pre production, as it can make a project to the high standard market if you have a big enough budget or it can make the project difficult to make due to your finances being small. Finance are used to hire out actors, cameras, film crews, transport and location. Finance can be gained by the public as they can promote and advert their film asking for help on the internet which people can donate towards the film this will increase the quality. Equipment's is needed to make a good hard film but depending on what type of equipment you will be using as it will have to be in-between the budgets as the pricing of the camera, lighting, sound equipment etc. As to better equipment's the higher the chance of good result but high the cost. Budgets are made for reason this is why you can hirer out equipment's to reduce the price and the benefit of this is that you can use a high resolution camera for cheap rental price rather than buying one.

Time

Time is really important as to production that requires time to create filming or tv shows. Time is a vital part in production as every minute cost money as there are deadlines such as availability of a location, directing. If you are hiring out a location there will be most likely a filming period in which you will have to use all the time you will need till the deadline. Pre production will allow you to plan when and where filming is going to take place that will give enough time for production and this will allow you to  finish before deadlines. I have a piece of work of my own pre production paper work that I used to help me plan when to film to reach the deadline for my project was a shooting schedule. This helped by informing me when to film as I did have deadline due therefore allowing me to informing everybody   when the shooting schedule this gave me the information I needed to help me know when actors and equipment were available to film on different days therefore allowing myself working on my project the information of the days I will be filming, which keeps everything organised and prevents wasting time finding appropriate filming dates last minute. Shooting schedules are also used for mistakes and not going right on the day of filming so this can be changed by adding on another date. Actors and film crews are available certain hours and days therefore filming on this specific time will be the most important day of all as to hoping everything going to plan.

Pre production will allow you to plan what actors and film crew are available during production. Most actors and film crew are on set whiles production of the film and after production finishes they set deadlines. I have another pre production paper work as this is really helpful in terms of when to film, when to edit and when to finish. This is a good way of knowing how long to film and knowing time is vital so this is my production schedule. Actors and film crews are available certain hours and days therefore filming on this specific time will be the most important day of all as to hoping everything going to plan. Personnel

Personnel is another important aspect in the pre-production of creative media. You have to look at multiple aspects such as; the size of your team, assigning different roles and which people are competent workers who will get the job done. Film crew are as important factor in production as they are needed for many different aspects of a production such as location management, camera operators, sound embed, lighting and many other factors.  It all depends on the casting crew and how large the crew as it will be a bigger productions such as 'Fast and Furious' will require a bigger production and a bigger crew but comparing this film style to low key ones such as 'Four Lions' these types of films are only based around one country and it also doesn't need big casts, famous stars as its a small production and also the financing will be less. High budget films are able do have a larger, possibly more experienced film crew for a production due to the films having a bigger budget whereas independent films don't have the finances to allow for a larger film crew which will make the films rely on a smaller, less experienced film crew because they will be cheaper and more affordable. Ideally people should be hired who you feel have the best skill set and experience using those skills meaning they will be able to apply it to the development of your project. However, it is also sometimes a good idea to hire people who aren’t as qualified and can be trained by the more experienced personnel.

Facilities

When planning out what facilities you will need for the production of your project, you should take into the account the following; equipment, you must make sure you have all the correct equipment needed to create your project. Equipment's that are needed in the production are camera, tripod and as for post production you will need software that you can edit, computer and adding sound effects. All these equipment's are depending on the production that is taking place such as a low budget will not need high resolution camera with high standard tripod as a normal HD camera with standard tripod will fully work but as a high budget cost will require a more better camera or even cameras such as drones with large tripods that will give a bigger picture and high quality. With pre production will allow you to plan what type of equipment's required on your project.

Materials

Materials are the sources of requirement during pre production, this enables you do have scripts, storyboards, audio, recording music, costumes etc. Scripting plays are vital part in production as this will structure out the production such as it will inform the filming crew as to when and how to follow what needs to be said and filmed. Without the script filming would of never been a success as crew and cast crew will never know when to have the right time and the film crew not knowing what to do. For my script on my advert I have a storyboard of my production of what to say and when to film.
The styling and the makeup of the actors also as important for production due to costumes bringing the characters to life for the script they will be playing on screen. The reason for this is because it'll give a visual understanding for the writers to write out the right words and sentences for specific character.  To be able create the appropriate costume you will need costume designs which will make the costumes that match how you picture the characters looking for your production. Pre production enables you to design and plan what each characters costumes will look like which would speed up production due to you not picking out costumes during production.

Contributors

Contributors are all specialist and expert and they are employees and employers of the company (producers, directors, sound/ cameras/ video cameras and editors). Experts are need so actors are able to follow great path to create a great film also actors are trained with high quality experiences from the experts as to perform the greatest by following the experts steps such as stunts, emotional scenes and dramatic scene. The experts are hired from the history or other words the biographies of their background this will help the film directors vision the persons life also it'll give the director the insight on who they are working along sight with whether they are professionals or money grabbers.

 Locations
Locations are really vital into production as to filming as making a research before entering the location is vital as to knowing what you will be facing and what the environment that you will be encountering with as it all depends on the film. It also mean by doing a research onto the location it'll allows you to know when and what day it'll be busy by doing a primary research and how long it will take you to get there on time and return back on time, to know if there will be any traffic or not to ensure that you get there on time, also do weather research to know if it going to rain and to ensure that no electricity damage is made and also so that you don’t have to bring heavy equipment because you and the crew won’t be able to carry them under the rain or we will have to bring lot of our contributor to help and to make sure that the equipment don’t get wet by the rain. Locations are always required when making a production due to appropriate locations making productions look the way it is intended to look otherwise productions would not look right within certain scenes. Locations need to be safe for everyone working on set such as the actors and film crew otherwise people could get seriously injured.

Rules and Regulations

There are different rules surrounding shooting buildings and people. But whatever or whoever you're filming; you need to make sure it is legal. All productions, international and domestic, need proof of Public Liability Insurance in order to receive permission to film or carry out commercial photography. This Insurance covers the legal responsibilities of your production if your activities cause injury to a third party or damage to property. You should obtain a policy in the earliest stages of pre-production and maintain it until the completion of all post-production activities.
The policy can also be extended to include contingent motor liability for vehicles hired with drivers, and employees' own vehicles. - http://filmlondon.org.uk/legal

How much cover do you need?

As a general rule you will be required to have a minimum of £2 million cover for street filming and photography. In some areas you will be required to have at least £5 million.
The amount of cover required varies depending on:

  • The size of your production
  • The location you will be using
  • What the filming or photography will entail
Check with the location owners or the relevant Borough Film Service or local authority to find out exactly how much cover is required. - http://filmlondon.org.uk/legal

As a  student need permission it is a easy way of getting through the issue as college or university covers for the permission slip and its a no money costing scheme. You will need prove from the college or university as why you are filming, reason for the filming and where will the filming be shown at such as youtube, live tv or programmes.

ASA (Adverting Standard Agency) play a massive role in this production as they will submit either if its a copy right or a pass ASA standard. The purpose of them taking action towards advertisement with rude content is to not mislead people to think differently as children are more on technology, this will hint advertisement with rude content to change children's social life and they will think it’s normal. Its purpose also is to make advertisement reasonable, proactive and meaningful, they quote 'responsible advertisements are good for people, society and advertisers' this shows they are proud and also hard-core about the work they do and they will not stop till it’s over.

Advertisement Booklets

This is my first half of my production papers but half war through the filming I decided to chance it, the reason for it because the whole idea didn't work around the timing, the way it will be filmed and how to make it a short and simple but eye catching advertisement.

This is my second have of the production papers which I decided to chose and do for my advertisement, this idea worked around the timing, who to film with and it was really catching to views as I kept it simple with unique.

Advert Evaluation - Feedback

Polljunike Feedback

This is my polljunike response from varieties of people in Media Level 3. The reason of doing a polljunike is to know how many people will find my advertisement amusing or boring as everyone has different taste.

The questions varies from personal questions to how they felt about my documentary. I had positive feedback also negative feedback but from the video response it shows how could I improve next time. In total of these questionnaire I've got 10 different age group people who have answered my questions about hair product, 'Coconut Shake Oil'.

YouTube Feedback

This is a youtube video of some of the media student at Hyde Clarendon College, which gave me feedback on how could I improve next time and how its relevant to the viewers. This feedback is helpful because its a primary and secondary research that makes me want to improve next time by enhancing on the editing and more on research.

The two feedback that I've got where Lauren Hamer and Robyn Moffat which are doing Media Level 3 at Hyde Clarendon College, they are helpful knowing they are also are media students its basically an feedback from a expert as to show me how to improve next time.

Excel Graph

This is my excel graphs from percentage of people who have answered my questions, this goes up on colours for example 'Would you use my product?' the colours goes in order from 25% 'yes' colour in blue, 40% 'no' colour in red and 30% 'maybe' colour green.
